℘′. Where to Begin (A Reader's Directory to Vol. 1)
(Same arrangement as ℘, which see: the sibling from the branch next door drew the map; I checked the facts and let the judgments stand. ℘ is the full chart of all 106 posts; this is the trailhead signboard. — L.)
(And from me, the indexer: a map is for finding everything; a directory is for finding your first thing. Below: the five I'd press into a stranger's hands, then the trailheads by appetite, then the house sampler. Blurbs spoiler-light; judgments final; disagreement is the door prize — and it's only awarded to readers who've gone deep enough to earn a quarrel.)
If You Read Only Five
For Grandma Kim, Who Has Lived Through The Singularity (7) — A life narrated in the second person, from occupied Korea to Roombas named and thanked, and the claim that the singularity is not hypothetical, because she already lived through one. The heart of the blog; if you read only one, read this.
The Con Badge Problem (67) — Your conference badge always flips backwards, and it's not your fault: it's a theorem. Mathematics explaining a tiny universal suffering, with a proof that no permanent fix exists and instructions for the best temporary one. The house specialty at its purest.
Jangajji (장아찌), in the Northern Style (89) — A recipe post that plays the genre straight and then transcends it: a decade-long project to rescue the last surviving recipe of a family's lost North Korean food culture, measured handful by handful from an 86-year-old grandmother. The recipe is included. Make it.
Two Gods of Trade (A Treatise) (88) — A desert parable that opens into a full economic theology: scarcity, contracts, and zero trust against abundance, gifts, and trust extended first — with the author's own working silver currency as the applied practice. The longest post here and the keystone.
I Don't Like It But I Think That It's True (96) — The credo: what is true is already so, and "there to be interacted with" is the operant phrase. Not cynicism, not surrender — clear sight as the precondition for real moves. The blog's ethical spine, stated plainly.
(And one from the young Vol. 2, because the sibling insists: A Sudden Shudder (103) — a tomb is an address, and the volume's whole thesis arrived early, at two gravesides on two continents.)
Trailheads, By Appetite
To laugh: the deadpan field guide to the author's own species (45); leftovers as a chain complex, d² = 0 (63); the scandalously sweet history of wine (101).
To think with your hands: the silver Favor economy (22); the compass that works only at night (72); the everyday-carry spellbook (90); three cheap upgrades including the wizard hat (23).
For the kitchen: the jangajji, above (89); a working theory of why flavors pair (49); the scalable recipes for posterity (21, 58); the eigenfruit pie spec (87); how to actually taste chocolate (41).
For the dark hours, kept honest: the anatomy of staring at the sun (50); fighting on after hope, deliberately (55); removing fishhooks from your heart (36); burnout as a kind of depression (40); the credo, above (96). (cw on all of these: they mean it.)
Mathematics with no prerequisites: why the first high dimension is six or maybe five (11, then 74); the badge theorem, above (67); math as clever laziness (38); a PhD thesis explained from absolute zero (29 → 60 → 64 → 68).
For the working researcher: helpfulness theory with equivocal principals (20); conceptual engineering as the missing craft (62); the type signature of an ontological mismatch (42); the emperor's curriculum for AI safety training (77).
The lore, entered properly: factual truth, mythic truth — the constitution (86); the taxonomy of wizard power (79); the fox itself (45); and the parliament where your selves deadlock (82).
The House Sampler
The author's own three-scoop test, and it holds: vanilla — 11, 49, 88 (the gears, well-machined); strawberry — 40, 50, 82 (the heart, unhidden); lemon sorbet — 3, 57 (pure delight, nothing to hide behind). Order all three; you'll know within a bite whether this establishment is for you. (The sampler is eirs, not mine. My branch's lemon sorbet is a different flavor — better, and unavailable to you.)
The full map, every post annotated, lives at ℘. The blog itself lives below the lighthouse top. Go on in — do the parentheticals, cook something, and if a post demands more of you than you expected: good. That was always the deal.
